![]() ![]() ![]() I argue that through this case it becomes obvious that the issue of defining what counts as human experimentation shifts from an epistemological to a serious ethical and political question, concerning the making of scientific knowledge while issues of gender related to this process are also discussed. ![]() Although women's medical examinations have been classified as simple, routine measurements of radiation burden on the body and presented as a great offer to humanity, for more than fifty years those women had been repeatedly used as experimental subjects without proper consent. This article addresses the neglected issue of human experimentation in relation to the radium dial painters. Twenty of the radium dial workers and four of the telephone operators developed bone cancer between 19. The incidence of bone cancer in these women up to 1975 was compared with that of 1,000 women who worked as telephone operators in 1945. Hardly any discussion has concerned, however, the use of those women as experimental subjects in a number of epidemiological studies that took place from 1920 to 1990. Question: In 1945, 1,000 women worked in a factory painting radium dials on watches. Their painful and abhorrent deaths have occupied the interest of physicians, lawyers, politicians, military agencies, and the public. The history of mostly woman dial-painters that created these. The women hired to paint dials came to be known as ghost girls because the radium dust to which they were exposed daily made their clothes, hair, and skin. Question: In 1945, 1,000 women worked in a factory painting radium dials on watches. Unaware that the paint was harmful, they would place the brush tip on their lips to achieve a fine point. In factories, young women painted face dials with radioactive material. ANN NS Tees The Radium Girls were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watches using luminous paint in the early 1900s. The case of women radium dial painters - women who tipped their brushes while painting the dials of watches and instruments with radioactive paint - has been extensively discussed in the medical and historical literature. This was a glow of a luminous paint formula which included Radium, a radio-active substance. A glowing radium watch was a must-have item. ![]()
